About Calvin

Calvin Ness was 13 years old when he died from a head injury sustained during warm-ups for a baseball game. The trauma was severe and he never regained consciousness. He is remembered for his love of the game and his determined spirit. Though often one of the smallest players on the field, he had incredible knowledge of the game and fundamentals, proving countless times to not underestimate size.  In baseball he found a family of friends, many of whom he had played ball with since age 7. His younger brother often played on the same team as well, and his father coached. Baseball was a constant thread in his life. When not on the field, Calvin could be quiet and introspective—though his friends would say differently. Either way, he was keenly aware of others, and could bring you to tears with the thoughtfulness of a gift or make you laugh with an insightful comment that reminded you he missed nothing.  We all wish we could have seen the man he would become. He liked to help his father and grandfather with projects, displaying a craftsman’s attention to detail and an engineer’s mind for problem solving.  He had an amazing recall of facts ranging from sports trivia to history to bird calls. He made us feel so deeply loved that we will miss him each and every day.
